Shopping in Amsterdam is quite diverse. The main two shopping streets are Kalverstraat and Leidsestraat, which are connected by the Koningsplein and Heiligeweg. If you are looking for more unique boutique-like shops and independent stores, then you should head to the smaller shopping areas such as De 9 Straatjes, the Canal Belt West with the shopping streets Haarlemmerdijk, Haarlemmerstraat, Herenstraat and Prinsenstraat. These areas have a wide variety of charming shops and speciality stores.

There are some shopping streets and areas further out of the city centre of Amsterdam, but on this site we focus more on the shopping in the city centre of Amsterdam. For more luxury shopping and the high-end fashion designers P.C. Hooftstraat is the place to be, including the close by Van Baerlestraat and Cornelis Schuytstraat

Our favourite shops in Amsterdam

On these pages we have listed the shops in Amsterdam that we think offer something special, have good customer service or are just a must to visit when shopping in Amsterdam. We have categorised our shop recommendations in six categories:
  • Fashion Stores
  • Gift Shops
  • Department Stores & Shopping Centres
  • Speciality Food Stores
  • Markets
  • Other Shops

Fashion Stores in Amsterdam

In the category "Fashion Stores" we have listed our recommendations for shops that have anything to do with fashion in the broadest sense, such as: shoes, clothes, vintage clothes, bags, handbags, accessories, jewellery, etcetera.

Gift Shops in Amsterdam

The Gift Shops we have listed are not the traditional 'tourist-trap' souvenirs shops, that you can find anywhere along the Damrak, Rokin or in the main shopping streets Kalverstraat and Leidsestraat. We have found a couple of original, modern, special gift and/or souvenirs shops in Amsterdam that deserve your attention and a visit.

Department Stores & Shopping Centres in Amsterdam

There are a couple of smaller and bigger department stores and shopping centres in Amsterdam. We have listed the ones we think jump out because of their range, service and in some cases also a bit because of their architecture, like Magna Plaza, which is a shopping centre situated in the old main Post Office of Amsterdam - a 1899 building and listed as an UNESCO monument.

Speciality Food Stores in Amsterdam

Okay, we have to admit...this is maybe our favourite shop category: "Speciality Foods". Here we have listed the stores that stick out above the regular food stores. Do you like, cheese, chocolate, traditional Dutch candies - yes including liquorice - or organic food? Then check out these pages. You won't be disappointed.

Markets in Amsterdam

In this category you will find our recommendations for a variety of markets in Amsterdam, that are worthwhile visiting. Of course the Albert Cuyp Market and the Flower Market are mentioned here; it is not for nothing that these markets are the most famous markets of Amsterdam. But there is more to see than just these two markets.

Other Shops in Amsterdam

Here we have listed shops in Amsterdam that we could not bring under one of the above mentioned categories, but those shops definitely need your attention and a visit too!

We hope you will have lots of fun, shopping in Amsterdam!
