Sightseeing outside Amsterdam

There is lots to do outside the city of Amsterdam. Not far from Amsterdam there are beaches, the Amsterdam forest, historic windmills and the world famous tulip festival Keukenhof in Spring. Or you can easily visit one of the picturesque villages nearby Amsterdam. If your stay in Amsterdam is longer than a weekend, consider exploring The Netherlands by doing one of these (half) day trips. You will see that there is more to The Netherlands than just Amsterdam!

Zandvoort, Bloemendaal and IJmuiden are all easy to reach from Amsterdam. Visit one of the many popular beach clubs, or venture out and have a long walk through the tranquil dunes or the quieter stretches of the coast, far away from the city.

On warm days it seems that everyone in the Netherlands is going to the beach, so go early to avoid traffic jams and make sure you have the right spot.
Go to the details & reviews page of Cheese market Alkmaar outside Amsterdam Alkmaar is a scenic historic town in the province of Noord-Holland. The city centre is enchanting, with canals and gable-topped houses. Established in 939, the town of Alkmaar is best known for its cheese products.

A world-famous cheese market takes place each Friday from 10:00-12:30 on the Waagplein; from the beginning of April until the beginning of September. It features the traditional weighing of cheeses and colourful hagglers. The cheese market has taken place on the Waagplein in Alkmaar since 1593.

Haarlem is sometimes referred to as 'little Amsterdam' as it has a similar feel to the city with canals giving it an extra charm. Admire the picturesque façades, the monuments and the museums.

Haarlem has a beautiful city centre with many places of interest and a great variety of shops, cafés and restaurants. The Grote Markt is the central market square of Haarlem with the Sint-Bavo church and a weekly market.

The prosperity from the Golden Age can still be seen in the historical town centre of Hoorn, with its old streets and gates, and the many splendid monuments. The monumental harbour houses many lovely restaurants and bars.

Hoorn has a direct train connection with Amsterdam, the train ride takes some 40 minutes. From Hoorn Station, it is only a few minutes stroll to the historic town centre.

The harbour and the fish market form the lively centre. The small houses with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots. Volendam also features a small museum about its history and clothing style, and visitors can have their pictures taken in traditional Dutch costumes.

There were once more than a thousand windmills situated alongside the river Zaan, six of which can now be found at the Zaanse Schans. Learn more of the old Dutch crafts in the different windmills and museums or enjoy a pleasant river cruise on the Zaan.
